3 causes of car accidents

On Behalf of | Feb 27, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Sometimes a car accident happens because of something that is beyond anyone’s control, such as inclement weather. However, most accidents happen because a driver either did something wrong or failed to do something important.

Such accidents can result in serious injuries or even fatalities despite usually being preventable. AZ Big Media describes some of the reasons why car accidents happen.

1. Speeding

People who speed are usually aware of what they are doing and that it is wrong. They may be able to offer up reasons for speeding that seem legitimate, such as that they are running late for work. Nevertheless, regardless of a driver’s reason for speeding and whether it seems justifiable, increased speed results in decreased control over the vehicle, a frequent cause of accidents.

2. Reckless driving

Reckless driving is a flagrant disregard for the rules of the road that help keep everyone safe. Examples of reckless driving include the following:

  • Driving toward oncoming traffic
  • Making an illegal U-turn
  • Driving between lanes
  • Accelerating abruptly
  • Racing spontaneously

3. Distracted driving

People who live hectic lives try to find ways to multitask. They think that grooming, eating or using their phones while behind the wheel is a more efficient use of their time. However, any activity that takes a driver’s attention off the road is a distraction.

There are several factors that make distracted driving especially dangerous. A driver may multitask while driving every day without anything bad happening, making it seem as though driving while distracted is no big deal. Nevertheless, a few seconds’ distraction is all it takes for an unexpected situation on the road to turn into a tragedy when a driver’s attention is elsewhere.
