Can you prevent injuries in a car accident?

Sometimes, no matter how carefully you drive, unexpected circumstances can result in a car accident. While the situation itself may, at times, be inevitable, your preparation may minimize your risk of injury.

Creating a high standard for yourself may help you successfully avoid common errors that may trigger serious injuries.

Seatbelts and seat position

Car accidents happen every day in California, many resulting in life-changing injuries. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, there were over 3,500 fatalities from car accidents in the year 2019. Perhaps the most important thing you can do to protect yourself is to always wear your seatbelt.

Equally as important is the way you adjust your seat while driving. Your chair should maintain an upright position and be approximately 10 inches away from your steering wheel. Adjust the steering wheel to sit at a comfortable height. Prior to driving anywhere, adjust your controls to your preference. Program your GPS and keep your music at a controlled level where you can still maintain awareness of your surroundings.

Cargo and conversation

Unsecured cargo can pose a huge threat to your safety if it comes loose and flies around the cab during an accident. Properly secure any cargo, including pets and their cages if you have them. Make sure your children have adequate child restraints for their weight and height. Encourage them to refrain from asking you to do anything while driving.

When you drive with passengers in the vehicle, use mindfulness to prevent conversations from becoming overly rambunctious or out of control. Never use your cellphone while driving. These actions taken both during and prior to driving can minimize the risks of an injury if you end up in a precarious situation.
