How can you tell if a motorcycle helmet is safe to wear?

As you travel on the open road, an accident involving your motorcycle and another vehicle may happen. Many of these occur suddenly and without warning, which means it is important to choose equipment that keeps you safe.

Knowing how to choose a fitting motorcycle helmet is one important safety aspect of owning and operating a motorcycle.

Figure out your head size

According to the United States Department of Transportation, the shape of your head determines how well the helmet protects your skull and brain. You can determine whether you have an oval head or a round head by looking in the mirror.

You should try on different types of helmets and notice which ones feel comfortable and snug. If you notice any painful spots after wearing it for a while, that shape may not be the right kind of helmet for you.

Stay aware of knock-offs

Some helmets you find in stores may not actually protect your head in the event of a crash. These options are not manufactured for use on the road, which means they do not have the proper designs or inner lining that helps your brain stay safe.

If it is significantly lighter than normal or that does not have strong chin straps that can withstand tension, then it may be an imitation helmet.

Notice the sticker

Some helmets have a white and black sticker on the back. This self-certification sticker shows that manufacturers tested and met standards for safety based on their word.

Make sure to not fall for a fake sticker that looks similar to the official one. Helmet safety is an important topic for anyone who uses a motorcycle, whether that is on the highway or back roads.
